Is the ATO using AI to check my tax return?
Short answer: yes. The ATO has quietly built one of the most sophisticated AI-driven compliance systems in the world, and if you run a business, it's already looking at your numbers. That sounds alarming, but for anyone running a clean operation it's actually good news. Here's how it works and what to do about it.
How the ATO's AI actually works
Three main ways. First, benchmarking. The ATO compares your return against the typical numbers for your industry, your location and your business size. If a plumber in your area usually reports costs within a certain range and yours are wildly different, that stands out. Second, data matching. The ATO automatically pulls data from banks, employers, share registries and payment platforms like Stripe and PayPal, and cross-checks it against what you've lodged. Third, GST monitoring. It watches BAS lodgements for patterns, including businesses that look like they've gone over the $75,000 threshold but haven't registered.
Why some businesses get flagged
It's usually not fraud. It's being an outlier. If your income or deductions fall outside the normal range for a business like yours, the system flags it for a human to look at. Sometimes there's a perfectly good reason. But if your records don't back it up, that's where it gets uncomfortable.
The reassuring part
The ATO's AI isn't there to catch honest mistakes. It's there to find patterns of genuine non-compliance. If you run a clean operation and keep good records, the AI actually works in your favour. Your return gets processed faster, with less manual poking around. Good records aren't just about surviving an audit, they're what keeps you off the radar in the first place.
What to actually do
Keep clean, complete records. Make sure your deductions are genuine and you can back them up. If you're registered for GST, stay on top of your BAS. And if your numbers are going to look unusual for a good reason, that's exactly the sort of thing to have your accountant document properly, so if the AI does flag it, there's a clear answer ready.
That's a lot of what we do, keeping your records tidy and defensible so the ATO's systems see a business that's doing the right thing. If you're not confident yours would hold up, let's have a look.
