What you should never ask AI about your business tax

AI has become the first place a lot of business owners go with a tax question. Most of the time that's fine. But there's a growing pile of evidence that it's costing people real money, and knowing where the line is will save you a nasty surprise. As a firm that uses AI every day, here's the honest guide.

This is a real, measured problem

It's not scaremongering. Recent research across hundreds of Australian accountants and bookkeepers found the majority are aware of businesses that have lost money acting on incorrect or misleading AI-generated tax advice, and a large chunk say they're fixing AI-driven client mistakes every single week. The technology isn't the problem. The problem is the questions being asked of it.

Where AI is genuinely safe to use

Ask it to explain a concept. "What is GST." "What's the difference between a contractor and an employee." "What does BAS stand for." For understanding, it's fast and usually accurate, and understanding your own numbers better is exactly what we want for you.

Where it quietly bites

The danger is anything specific to your situation. AI doesn't know your structure, your history, what you've already claimed, or the rule that changed last month. So questions like "can I claim this," "how much tax will I owe," or "should I set up a trust" get answers that sound confident and authoritative but are generic, and generic in tax often means wrong for you. It also can't see that a deduction which is fine for one business is a red flag for another.

The accountability gap

Here's the bit people forget. If AI gives you wrong advice and you act on it, you wear the consequences, not the software. The ATO holds you responsible, not the chatbot. When we give you advice, we carry the responsibility for it. That accountability is a big part of what you're actually paying an accountant for.

The smart way to use it

Use AI to learn and to ask sharper questions. Then bring those questions to someone who knows your business and can be held to the answer. An informed owner plus a real accountant beats either on their own. That's genuinely how we like to work. If you've been leaning on AI for the specific stuff, it's worth a chat before it costs you.
